Core area regulations (National Park)

The Lozère is yours to enjoy and share, but in certain areas it may be subject to specific regulations to ensure its preservation.

The Cevennes National Park includes a core zone that benefits from a protected status. These regulations are in addition to the national rules currently in force.

The core zone is marked on roads by signs reading “Parc national des Cévennes – Protected area” and on paths and trails by signs or markers displaying the message: “Welcome, you are entering a protected area. Please respect the regulations.” The main rules are:

  • Keep your dog on a leash in the core zone;
  • Do not disturb or feed wildlife;
  • Be discreet in natural areas;
  • Do not light fires;
  • Do not leave any waste in nature;
  • Do not collect fossils or archaeological objects;
  • Do not sleep in a vehicle within the core zone;
  • Check the rules before setting up a bivouac, as it is not allowed everywhere in the core zone.

You can find the full regulations for outdoor activities in the park’s core zone on the interactive map.

Wildfire Risk

Lozère is an area regularly exposed to wildfires.

To help prevent these devastating events for the territory and its inhabitants, I follow these guidelines:

  • I check wildfire risk conditions via Météo des Forêts;
  • I do not light fires in natural areas;
  • I do not discard cigarette butts and place them in an ashtray;
  • I do not use matches or lighters in nature.
BIVOUACKING IN LOZERE

Bivouacking is considered equivalent to wild camping, which is only permitted outside public roads and with the landowner’s consent. However, bivouacking is strictly prohibited:

  • in listed and classified sites such as the Tarn, Jonte and Causses Gorges;
  • within the perimeter of designated heritage sites and around historic monuments;
  • and on land located within a 200-meter radius of water catchment points used for drinking water.

In the core area of the Cévennes National Park, bivouacking is tolerated within a maximum distance of 50 meters from long-distance hiking trails (GR and GRP), using a lightweight tent that does not allow you to stand upright inside, for one night only and between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. Motorhomes, camper vans, and equipped 4x4 vehicles are not permitted to leave designated roads to bivouac off-track.
